Jeba Moneyrajan

Holmesglen Institute, Australia - Diploma of Business (Marketing)

At the moment, I am studying the Diploma of Business (Marketing) which leads to the Charles Sturt University Bachelor of Business offered at Holmesglen. It is truly a new experience for me.

The teaching and coaching style in Holmesglen is very different from what I have done before. Small class sizes, lots of group activities and friendly academic staff have really changed my whole understanding about higher studies. The design and content of the courses are very job-oriented and i feel that they are very much related to the real business environment. Other activities at Holmesglen like sports and recreation facilities keep me energised and happy everyday.

Melbourne became my home away from home in a very few days after my arrival.

Of course I miss my family and my country, but there are a lot of Sri Lankan students and so many friendly and helpful people from different backgrounds. All this has made Melbourne a lovely and peaceful home for me. The clean environment and independent lifestyle of the young generation really attracted me and helped me to get settled. There are many different types of jobs available for students.

I managed to find an office job in a really short time and I am very happy with the working conditions. It is encouraging to experience that there is no discrimination on the job status and there is an equal status in the working environment.

I really appreciate the way people are treated and taken care of.

Holmesglen has its own culture, and that's unique. It is the culture that suited me and I highly recommend it to prospective students.

Aubrey Paternott

Melbourne's Chisholm Institute

Studying hospitality management at Melbourne's Chisholm Institute was an easy decision for Sri Lankan born Aubrey Paternott, who says like many, he was drawn to the thriving metropolis of cuisine that makes it, truly, one of the world's most liveable cities.

Melbourne's strong multicultural communities and the abundance of world-class cafes and restaurants has also become a draw card for many aspiring chefs and hospitality workers.

Aubrey says he is only one of hundreds of students who've flocked from all over the world to experience Melbourne, and in particular, to gain further skills from Chisholm's highly experienced and industry focused hospitality trainers.

"Not only are the teachers highly experienced and qualified, Chisholm is very well equipped with a high standard of practical kitchens and their very own student training restaurant where students get to serve real customers.

"Since being here I've also found people in Melbourne to be very friendly and highly culturally diverse - they respect and recognise each other.

"Just like when colours come together to form one beautiful rainbow, there are different cultures living together in Melbourne to form one beautiful city," he said.

Recently employed through Chishlom's strong industry networks, Aubrey and his wife have settled into the Australian way of life and says he couldn't be happier.

"My biggest achievement here in Melbourne has been getting a job as a cook at Sandhurst Club, House of the Professional Golf Association Australia, and being able to work up to the expectations of my head chef.

"That is a major achievement to me because that makes you believe in yourself and gives you confidence - I have my Chisholm trainers to thank for this," he said.

Aubrey describes studying the Diploma of Hospitality Management as fascinating and challenging, a mix he says has been vital to his overall Chisholm learning experience.

"My study has been so enjoyable. I love cooking and I enjoyed practical classes - especially the restaurant kitchen. It gives enormous satisfaction and confidence when someone enjoys the food you prepared and compliments you.

"The most fascinating thing has been the diverse mix of nationalities in my class room. You're always learning from you fellow students - different tastes, languages, cultures, festivals - as they say, variety is the spice of life."

Like Aubrey, hundreds of students enroll at Chisholm each semester to gain skills especially in occupations with acute skills shortages. In addition to the Diploma of Hospitality Management course that Aubrey is undertaking, students are enrolled in other Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses in Engineering Technology, Automotive Management, Building and Construction, Visual Arts incorporating Pre Press and Community Welfare.

Being a premier Government-funded institute, Chisholm has excellent capability to provide industry-relevant skills sets which enable graduates to source well-paid jobs not just in Australia but all over the world.
